2025/Webinar: Second Wave of Recent Hong Kong Migrants in Canada Survey

Online Webinar organised by UBC Hong Kong Studies Initiative on February 19, 2025

Presenter(s): Calvin Ngai

In recent years, many people from Hong Kong have moved to Canada, especially after the political changes back home. While there’s been some research and discussion about this group, most of it focuses on big-picture issues like immigration rules or politics. This study looks more closely at everyday life, what it’s like for these newcomers as they settle into Canada, build new routines, and try to feel at home.
This second wave of the study, completed in early 2024, includes responses from 636 people who moved from Hong Kong to Canada after 2019. Most came through programs like the Open Work Permit or Permanent Residence pathways. The report looks at their settlement experience, their work and income situations, and how they feel about life in Canada.

Through surveys, the study finds that many talked about feeling uncertain, not only because of the situation in Hong Kong but also because of challenges in Canada, like finding good jobs or feeling truly included in society. While they’re thankful for safety and new opportunities, they also face stress, sadness, and questions about their future. Key themes that came up include mental health struggles, changes in job status, the importance of community, and mixed feelings about belonging.
